On the daith o Victoria in 1901, George's faither acame Keeng Edward VII, an George wis made Prince o Wales. On his faither's daith in 1910, he succeedit as Keeng-Emperor o the Breetish Empire. He wis the anly Emperor o Indie tae be present at his awn Delhi Durbar.

As a result o the First Warld War, ither empires in Europe fell while his expandit tae its greatest extent. In 1917, he acame the first monarch o the Hoose o Windsor, which he renamed frae the Hoose o Saxe-Coburg an Gotha as a result o anti-German public sentiment. His reign saw the rise o socialism, communism, fascism, Irish republicanism, an the Indian unthirldom movement, aw o which radically chynged the poleetical landscape. The Parliament Act 1911 established the supremacy o the electit Breetish Hoose o Commons ower the unelected Hoose o Lords. In 1924 he appyntit the first Labour meenistry an in 1931 the Statute o Westminster recognised the dominions o the Empire as separate, independent kinricks within the Commonweel o Naitions. He wis plagued bi illness throughout much o his later reign an at his daith wis succeedit bi his eldest son, Edward VIII.
