Kaliningrad Oblast (Roushie: Калинингра́дская о́бласть, Kaliningradskaya oblast) is a federal subject o Roushie (an oblast) situatit on the Baltic coast. It haes a population o 941,873 (2010 Census).[8]
The oblast forms the wastrenmaist pairt o Roushie, but it haes nae land connection tae the rest o the kintra. Syne its creation it haes been an exclave o the Roushie SFSR an then o the Roushie Federation. The faw o the Soviet Union left it isolatit frae the 'mainland'. It is surroondit bi Lithuanie, Poland, an the Baltic Sea. Borderless travel tae the main pairt o Roushie is anerlie possible bi sea or air. This poleetical isolation became mair pronooncit when Lithuanie an Poland baith became members o the European Union an NATO, and entered the Schengen Zone, which means that the oblast is surroondit bi the territories o these organizations as well.
The oblast's lairgest ceety an the admeenistrative center is Kaliningrad (umwhile kent as Königsberg), which haes historical significance as baith a major ceety o the historical state o Proushie an the caipital o the umwhile German province o East Proushie, pairtitioned efter Warld War II atween the USSR an Poland, an renamit efter the Soviet Heid o State Mikhail Kalinin.
The territory o the Kaliningrad Oblast coincides wi that o the northren pairt o historical East Proushie (German: Nord-Ostpreussen), which wis an exclave o Germany frae Warld War I till 1945. In that year, it wis occupeed bi the Soviet Union an annext accordin tae the Potsdam Agreement. It wis attached tae the Roushie SFSR. Maist o its German population haed fled tae the "mainland" o Germany durin the war; the rest wur expelled frae 1945 tae 1950. Roushie settlers muivit in, an the population haes been Roushie iver syne.
Currently it is ane o Roushie's best performin regional economies, bolstered bi a law manufacturin tax rate, as set bi its 'Special Economic Zone' [SEZ] status, given bi Moscow. As o 2006, ane in three televeesions in Russia are made in Kaliningrad, an its population is ane o the few in Roushie which are expectit tae show strang growth.[11]
