The Republic o Tatarstan (Roushie: Респу́блика Татарста́н, Respublika Tatarstan; Tatar Cyrillic: Татарстан Республикасы, Laitin: Tatarstan Respublikası) is a federal subject o Roushie (a republic) locatit in the Volga Federal Destrict. Its caipital is the ceety o Kazan, which is ane o Roushie's lairgest an maist prosperous ceeties. The republic borders wi Kirov, Ulyanovsk, Samara, an Orenburg Oblasts, an wi the Republics o Mari El, Udmurtie, an Chuvashie, as well as wi the Republic o Bashkortostan. The unoffeecial Tatarstan motto is: Bez Buldırabız! (We can!).[12] Population: 3,786,488 (2010 Census).[7]

"Tatarstan" derives frae the name o the Tatar ethnic group an the Proto-Sanskrit suffix -stan (an endin common tae mony Central Asie kintras). Anither version o the Roushie name is "Тата́рия" (Tatariya), which wis offeecial alang wi "Tatar ASSR" durin the Soviet rule.
Inhabitants o Tatarstan regardless o ethnicity are uisually cried Tatarstaners (Tatar Cyrillic: татарстанлы, Laitin: Tatarstanlı, татарстанцы).
