As o 1917, it bordered Saratov, Samara, an Stavropol Govrenorates, Don Cossack Voisko, Ural Cossack Host, Terek Oblast, an the Caspian Sea. It includit the Kalmyk steppe an Kyrgyz steppe.
Syne 1919 the geography o the guberniya/oblast haes been chyngit mony times. It assumed its present form in 1957.
