The Republic o North Ossetie–Alanie (Roushie: Республика Северная Осетия — Алания, tr. Respublika Severnaya Osetiya — Alaniya; IPA: [rʲɪˈspʊblʲɪkə ˈsʲevʲɪrnəjə ɐˈsʲetʲɪjə ɐˈlanʲɪjə]; Ossetic: Республикæ Цæгат Ирыстон — Алани, Respublikæ Tsægat Iryston-Alani listen^?) is a federal subject o Roushie (a republic). Its caipital is the ceety o Vladikavkaz. Its population accordin tae the 2010 Census wis 712,980.^[6]

In the last years o the Soviet Union, as naitionalist muivements swept throughoot the Caucasus, many intellectuals in the North Ossetian ASSR called for the revival of the name of Alanie, a medieval kinrick o the Alans, ancestors o the modren-day Osseties. The term o "Alanie" quickly became popular in Ossetie daily life through the names o various enterprises, a TV channel, poleetical an civic organizations, publishin hoose, soccer team, etc. In November 1994, the name o "Alanie" wis offeecially addit tae the republican title (Republic o North Ossetie–Alanie).^[10]
