The urban aurie o Marseille extends ayont the ceety limits wi a population o ower 1,420,000[2] on an aurie o 1,204 km2 (465 sq mi). 1,530,000[3] or 1,601,095[4] fowk live in the Marseille metropolitan aurie. Locatit on the sootheast coast o Fraunce on the Mediterranean Sea, Marseille is Fraunce's lairgest commercial port an lairgest French ceety on the Mediterranean coast. Marseille is the caipital o the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, as well as the caipital o the Bouches-du-Rhône depairtment. Its inhabitants are cawed Marseillais.
