The Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), Tibet or Xizang for short, cried the Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibetan: བོད་རང་སྐྱོང་ལྗོངས། ; Cheenese: 西藏自治区) an aw, is a province-level autonomous region o the Fowkrepublic o Cheenae (PRC). It wis creatit in 1965 on the basis o an admeenistrative region which haed been incorporatit intae the PRC in 1951.

Athin the Cheenae, Tibet is identifeed wi the Autonomous Region, which includes aboot hauf o ethno-cultural Tibet, includin the traditional provinces o Ü-Tsang an the wastren hauf o Kham. The borders o the present Autonomous Region coincide roughly wi the actual zone o control o the then-govrenment o Tibet in 1950. The Tibet Autonomous Region is the seicont-lairgest province-level diveesion o Cheenae bi aurie, spannin ower 1,200,000 square kilometre (460,000 sq mi), efter Xinjiang, an due tae its generally hairsk terrain, is the least densely populatit provincial-level diveesion o the PRC.
