Affile (Laitin: Afilae[2]) is a comune (municipality) in the province o Roum in the Italian region Lazio, locatit aboot 50 km east o Roum.
History
[eedit | eedit soorce]Airchaeologie haes shawn the existence o a pre-Roman centre here, on the border o the launds o the Hernici an the Aequi. In the 1st century AD it is mentioned as oppidum Afile bi Frontinus. It wis crossed bi the Via Sublacense.
In the 10t century a veelage existit in the umwhile Roman oppidum, centred on the kirk o St. Peter. In 1013 a castle (castrum) is citit in Affile, that in 1109 wis cedit bi Pape Paschal II tae the Abbey o St. Scholastica o Subiaco. Later it wis a possession o the Altieri an Braschi faimilies.
Main sichts
[eedit | eedit soorce]- Roman cistern. In 999 emperor Otto III foondit in the steid a kirk, that haed housomeivver awready disappeared in the 16t century.
- Kirk o St. Peter, kent frae the early 6t century. The last renovation is frae the 15t century.
- Kirk o St. Mary (kent fraem 1005). It haes frescoes frae the 13t an 16t-17t centuries.
- Kirk o Santa Felicita (13t century)
- Castrum, steid on a different hill o the oreeginar steid o Affile aroond St. Peter's kirk. Ance, it haed numerous touers, gates an massive waws, few traces o it remain.
