Mayenne is ane o the oreeginal 83 depairtments creatit durin the French Revolution on 4 Mairch 1790. The northren twa thirds correspond tae the wastren pairt o the umwhile province o Maine. The soothren third o Mayenne corresponds tae the northren portion o the auld province o Anjou.

Efter the Coalition's victory at Waterloo, atween Juin 1815 an November 1818, Mayenne wis occupeed bi Proushie troops.
