In 1913 the govrenment o Colombie creatit the commissar o Vichada an the caipital wis established in a locality kent as El Picacho atween the Meta an Orinoco rivers. The toun wis namit Puerto Carreño in honor o Pedro María Carreño, then actin Meenister o Govrenment.[3]

In August 1974, Puerto Carreño wis elevatit tae the category o municipality bi decree 1594 o that same year.[3]

On 5 Julie 1991 Vichada wis elevatit tae the category o depairtment an Puerto Carreño as its caipital.[3]
