Uvs (Mongolie: Увс аймаг) is ane o the 21 aimags (provinces) o Mongolie. It is locatit in the wast o the kintra, 1336 km awa frae the naitional caipital Ulan Bator. Its caipital is Ulaangom whilk lees 936m abuin sea level.

The province is cried efter Mongolie's mucklest lake, Uvs Lake.

Geography

Pairts o the steppe in this province are protectit as the Warld Heritage Steid Ubsunur Hollow. In the north the province mairches Roushie for 640 km, in the east 340 km o mairch lees atween Uvs an Zavkhan province. In the sooth an wast it mairches wi Khovd an Bayan-Ölgii provinces for 200 km ilka. The province taks up 4.45% o the naitional territory, that is equivalent to 69,585 km². O the total area o the province, 60% belangs tae the muntainous climatic zone, an 40% tae the Gobi semi-desert.

Population

Altaic fowk hae bidit in the province throu history. Nou, 60% o population is Do'rbet, 15% is Bayid an 15% is Halh. Even theday thare are Tuvans, Khotons an Kazakhs bidin in this province.

The province is maistly atheist.

History

Efter the revolution in 1921 in Mongolie, on 21 November 1925 the govrenment foondit the Chandmani Uulyn Aimag (Чандмань уулын аймаг, Jewel Muntain Province). This province includit the whole wastren pairt o the kintra, i.e. the day's Uvs, Khovd an Bayan-Ölgii Aimags. In 1931 Chandmani Uulyn Aimag aimag wis split up intae the Khovd an Dörvöd aimags. Dörvöd aimag (Дөрвөд аймаг) wis renamit tae Uvs aimag in 1933.
