Arkhangai (Mongolie: Архангай, literally Northern Khangai) is ane o the 21 aimags o Mongolie. It is locatit slichtly wast tae the kintra's centre, on the northren slopes o the Khangai Muntains.

Geografie

The Arkhangai aimag is locatit in the interior o the kintra and borders tae the follaein ither aimags: Bulgan (north east), Övörkhangai (sooth east), Bayankhongor (sooth), Zavkhan (wast), an Khövsgöl (north wast).

The heicest point is Kharlagtai Peak at 3,529 m (11,578 ft), while the lawest point is the aurie on the confluence o the Orkhon an Tamir rivers at 1,290 m (4,232 ft). The maist well-kent muntain is the extinct volkano Khorgo, which is pairt o the Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur Naitional Pairk.

History

Efter the Fowk Revolution wan in 1921 throuoot Mongolie, reforms in admeenistrative unit wur made an the Tsetserleg Mandal Uul aimag wis established on the foondation o Sain Noyon Khan aimag. Arkhangai aimag wis formit frae pairts o the Tsetserleg Mandal Uul aimag in 1931. At that time, the aimag haed 35 sums, 65,333 inhabitants in 22,285 hoosehaulds, an 1,800,000 heid o livestock. The aimag centre Tsetserleg wis established at the steid o the Zaya Khüree monastery, which haed been first foondit in 1586.
