In 1987, durin the Communist regime o Todor Zhivkov, the destricts wur consolidatit intae nine lairger provinces (oblasts), which survivit till 1999.[1]
Each province is namit efter its caipital. In the case o Sofia Province an Sofia Caipital, Sofia is the caipital o baith, but its territory is anerlie includit in Sofia Caipital.
The provinces are further subdividit intae 264 municipalities (община, obshtina).

The nine lairge provinces are leetit below, alang wi the pre-1987 destricts (post-1999 provinces) comprisin them.
