Establisht on 25 Julie 1824, bi German immigrants, São Leopoldo is considered the cradle o German cultur in Brazil, that is tae say, it is the first offeecial ceety designed bi the naitional Brazilian govrenor tae stairt the German plan o immigration in the kintra. It haed, in 2006, a population o approximately 210,000.
São Leopoldo is ane o the 13 ceeties alang the Rota Romântica ('Romantic Route'), a touristic scenic route that runs frae the State Caipital towards the Serra Gaúcha.
