It is locatit in the wast o the oblast an borders wi Pskovsky Destrict in the north, Porkhovsky Destrict in the northeast, Novorzhevsky Destrict in the sootheast, Pushkinogorsky an Krasnogorodsky Destricts in the sooth, Pytalovsky Destrict in the wast, an wi Palkinsky Destrict in the northwast. The aurie the destrict is 2,400 square kilometers (930 sq mi).[3] Its admeenistrative centre is the toun o Ostrov.[2] Population: 31,096 (2010 Census);[4] 36,685 (2002 Census);[7] 14,199 (1989 Census).[8] The population o Ostrov accoonts for 69.7% o the destrict's total population.[4]

The entire destrict lies in the basin o the Velikaya River, a major tributar o Loch Peipus. The Velikaya crosses the destrict frae sootheast tae northwast; the toun o Ostrov is located on its banks. The major tributars o the Velikaya athin the destrict are the Sinyaya, the Utroya, an the Kukhva (aw left). The rivers in the east o the destrict drain intae the Cheryokha, which haes its source in the destrict, flows north, an ayont the destrict limits jyns the Velikaya frae the richt.

Ostrov wis first mentioned in 1342.[9] At the time, it wis a fortress subordinate tae Pskov an protectin it frae the sooth. Awready in the end o the 14t hunderyear the fortress wis built in stane. In 1406, the Livonie Order besiegit Ostrov but failed tae conquer it. The fortress wis first conquered bi the Order in 1501, an the toun wis devastatit. In the 18t hunderyear, the state border wis muivit further tae the wast, an the aurie lost its militar importance.[10]
