The entire destrict lies in the basin o the Velikaya River, a major tributar o Loch Peipus. The Velikaya crosses the destrict frae sootheast tae northwast; the toun o Ostrov is located on its banks. The major tributars o the Velikaya athin the destrict are the Sinyaya, the Utroya, an the Kukhva (aw left). The rivers in the east o the destrict drain intae the Cheryokha, which haes its source in the destrict, flows north, an ayont the destrict limits jyns the Velikaya frae the richt.
