The aurie haes been inhabitit syne prehistoric times. Archeological remains frae the Hallstatt period hae been foond in the aurie. In the 6t hunderyear, it wis settled bi Slavic tribes, ancestors o the modren Slovenes. Durin the Middle Ages, it wis first pairt o the Patriairchate o Aquileia, and later of Tolmin Coonty, afore bein includit in the Habsburg Monarchy in the 15t hunderyear, like the majority o Slovene-speakin territories. Wi the exception o a brief period atween 1809 an 1813, when it wis includit unner the Napoleonic Kinrick o Italy, it remained unner the Austrian rule till 1918.

In the mid-19t hunderyear, the aurie became an important centreo the Slovene naitional revival. Durin Warld War I, the whole aurie wis the theatre o the Battles o the Isonzo, focht atween Italy an Austrick-Hungary. Efter the end o the war in 1918, the region wis occupee'd bi the Italian Airmy, an in 1920 it wis offeecially annexed tae Italy, an includit in the Julian Mairch region. Atween 1922 an 1943, the Kobarid aurie, which haed a exclusively Slovene-speakin population, was submitted tae a policy o violent Fascist Italianization. Mony locals emigratit tae the neebourin Kinrick o Yugoslavie. Several Italian militar memorials wur built in the aurie.

Immediately efter the Italian airmistice in September 1943, the region wis leeberatit bi a pairtisan uprisin, an became the centre o lairge leeberatit aurie o aroond 2,500 square kilometres kent as the Kobarid Republic, admeenistered bi the Leeberation Front o the Slovenie Fowk. The aurie wis retaken bi German forces in early November 1943, who remained till Mey 1945 an the arrival o the Yugoslav Fowk's Airmy.

In September 1947, the Paris Peace Treaties awairdit the aurie tae Yugoslavie. Several hunder inhabitants, especially frae the Breginj aurie, chose emigration tae Italy rather than becomin ceetizens o a communist state.

Wi the breakup o Yugoslavie in 1991, the Kobarid aurie became pairt o the unthirlt Slovenie state.

Politics[eedit | eedit soorce]

The Municipality o Kobarid is govrened bi a mayor, electit bi popular vote ivery fower years, an a municipal couocil o 16 members. In baith the local an the naitional elections, Kobarid tends tae favor conservative pairties, especially the Slovenie Democratic Pairty (which is the lairgest pairty in the municipal cooncil).[4] Housomeivver, in the mayoral elections, the voters hae frequently supportit independent candidates. The current mayor Darja Hauptmann is a member o the Slovenie Democratic Pairty.
