Düren is a Kreis (destrict) in the wast o North Rhine-Westphalie, Germany. Neebourin destricts are Heinsberg, Neuss, Rhein-Erft-Kreis, Euskirchen an Aachen.

The destrict wis creatit in 1972 bi mergin the umwhile destricts o Jülich an Düren. Baith destricts date back tae 1816 when the new Proushie province Rhineland wis created. Afore the Napoleonic Wars aw o the aurie belangit tae the duchy o Jülich.

Geografie

Geografically it covers baith the lawlands o the Niederrheinische Bucht as well as the hills o the Eifel. The destrict haes rich lignite (broun coal) deposits, which is uised in open pit minin. Anither big industrie is paper production, which dates back tae the seicont pairt o the 16t century. The main river in the destrict is the Rur.
