In 1877 the admeenistrative seat wis muivit tae Vohwinkel. In 1929 mair o the aurie wis given ower tae Wuppertal, an the destrict wis mergit wi the destrict Düsseldorf (Landkreis, excludin the ceety itsel), tae form the destrict Düsseldorf-Mettmann, wi admeenistrative seat in Düsseldorf. In 1952 the seat went back tae Mettmann, an efter the last reorganization o 1975/76 the destrict got back the auld name. The ceeties Langenfeld an Monheim wur includit intae the destrict then, while Kettwig became pairt o the ceety Essen.
