Coonties o Lithuanie
The territory o Lithuanie is dealt intae 10 coonties (Lithuanie: singular apskritis, plural apskritys), aw cried efter their caipitals. The coonties are dealt intae 60 municipalities (Lithuanie: singular savivaldybė, plural savivaldybės): 9 city municipalities, 43 destrict municipalities an 8 municipalities. Ilka municipality is then dealt intae elderates (Lithuanie: singular seniūnija, plural seniūnijos). This division wis creatit in 1994 an slichtly modified in 2000.
Coonties are administered bi coonty govrenors (Lithuanie: singular – apskrities viršininkas, plural – apskrities viršininkai) that are appointit bi the central govrenment in Vilnius. Their primary duty is tae ensur that the municipalities obey the laws an the Constitution o Lithuanie. Thay dinnae hae great pouers vestit in them, an sae it is suggestit that 10 coonties are too hintle for Lithuanie as the twa smawest coonties administer anely fower municipalities. There is a proposal tae replace the coonties wi fower or five lands, a new administrative unit, that wid be decidit accordin tae the ethnographic regions o Lithuanie an based on the 5 major ceeties wi the population mair nor 100,000. On 1 Julie 2010, the coonty administrations wur abolished[1], an sin that date, coonties remain as the territorial an statistical units.
