In 1746 King Philip V bocht the aurie whaur San Fernando nou staunds tae instaw a ryal fabric factory. Efter the king's daith shortly thareefter, the project wis developit bi Ferdinand VI, who appointit Ventura de Argumosa as the govrenor o the Ryal Place.

Aroond the factory wirkers' dwellins wur built, which resultit in the oreegin o the toun. In front o the factory a great square wis opened (at present namit Plaza de España) which wis linkit wi anither nou namit Plaza de Fernando VI. The whole aurie haes been recently declared a historic an airtistic monument so it canna be modifee'd, tae protect the oreeginal hooses that still remain.

Throuoot its 200 year history, the municipality haes suffered ups an douns. Its emblematic biggin, the factory, haes been intendit for several uisses, notably as a hospice. Currently anerly the main facade staunds; haes been restored an incorporatit intae the new ceety haw.
