Alcalá de Henares (Spaingie pronunciation: [alkaˈla ðe eˈnaɾes]), meanin Citadel on the river Henares, is a Spainyie ceety whose historical centre is ane o UNESCO's Warld Heritage Steids. The ceety staunds oot for its rich airchaeology an wis ane o the first bishoprics foondit in Spain. Locatit in the Autonomous Commonty o Madrid, 35 kilometres (22 miles) northeast o the ceety o Madrid, at an altitude of 588 m (1,929 ft) above sea level, it has a population o aroond 200,000. Locally, the ceety is generally kent simply as "Alcalá", but "de Henares" is appendit when needit tae differentiate it frae a dozen Spainyie ceeties sharin the name Alcalá (frae the Arabic wird al-qal'a القلعة for fortification or citadel). The Laitin name, Complutum, is sometimes uised. The ceety is the caipital o its namesake region, Comarca de Alcalá.
