It is dividit intae 18 municipalities an its caipital ceety is Santiago de Querétaro.

It is located in North-Central Mexico, in a region kent as el Bajío. It is bordered bi the states o San Luis Potosí tae the north, Guanajuato tae the wast, Hidalgo tae the east, México tae the sootheast an Michoacán tae the soothwast.

The state is ane o the smawest in Mexico, but it is an aw ane o the maist heterogeneous geographically,[9][10] wi ecoseestems varyin frae deserts tae tropical rainforest, especially in the Sierra Gorda, which is filled wi micro ecoseestems. The aurie o the state wis locatit on the northren edge o Mesoamericae, wi baith the P’urhépecha an Aztec Empires haein influence in the extreme sooth, but neither really dominatit it. The aurie, especially the Sierra Gorda, haed a number o sma ceety states in but bi the time the Spaingie arrivit, these haed aw been abandoned, wi anerlie sma agricultural veelages an semi nomadic fowks inhabitin the aurie. Spaingie conquest wis focused on the establishment o the Santiago de Querétaro, which still dominates the state culturally, economically an educationally.
