Braunau am Inn (Inglis: Braunau on the Inn) is a ceety in the Innviertel region o Upper Austrick (Oberösterreich), the north-wastren state o Austrick. It lies aboot 90 km wast o Linz an aboot 60 km north o Salzburg, on the mairch wi the German state o Bavarie. The population in 2001 wis 16,372. A port o entry, it is connectit bi brigs ower the Inn River wi its Bavarie coonterpairt, Simbach am Inn. It is well-kent as the birthplace o Adolf Hitler.

Throughoot its history it chyngit haunds fower times. It wis Bavarie till 1779 an became an Austrian toun unner the terms o the Treaty o Teschen, which settled the War o the Bavarian Succession. As a major Bavarian ceety, the toun played an ootstaundin role in the Bavarian uprisin against the Austrian occupation durin the War o the Spainyie Succession, when it hostit the Braunau Parliament, a proveesional Bavarie Parliament in 1705 heidit bi Georg Sebastian Plinganser. Unner the terms o the Treaty o Pressburg, Braunau became Bavarie again in 1809. In 1816, durin reorganization o Europe Efter the Napoleonic Wars, Bavarie cedit the toun tae Austrick an wis compensatit bi the gain o Aschaffenburg. Braunau haes been an Austrian ceety iver syne.

Adolf Hitler wis born in Braunau am Inn on 20 Aprile 1889. He an his faimily left Braunau an muivit tae Passau in 1892. In 1989 the auld mayor Gerhard Skiba teuk the initiative an placed a memorial stane commemoratin the victims o Warld War II in front o the building in which Hitler wis born. The stone is made o granite frae the Mauthausen concentration camp. It states, Für Frieden, Freiheit und Demokratie. Nie wieder Faschismus. Millionen Tote mahnen, or "For peace, freedom an democracy; millions o deid urge: niver again fascism." It is aften vandalized bi members o neo-Nazi groups. In 2011, the toun cooncil revoked the honorary citizenship that haed been awardit tae Hitler in 1933.[3]

Ootside the biggin in Braunau am Inn, Austrick, whaur Adolf Hitler wis born is a memorial stane remindin futur generations tae remember the past. Efter twa successfu saisons, the local fitbaa team, SV Braunau, reached the Austrian 1st Diveesion afore suddent going bankrupt in 2000. The team wis refoondit as FC Braunau.
