In October 2013, efter the local govrenment cooncil elections, Põlva wis mergit tae the surroondin Põlva Pairish an tharefore lost its municipal status.

Afore thae cooncil consistit o 17 members electit on 18 October 2009 bi local votings. The govrenment consists o 5 members that wur electit bi the cooncil on 20 November 2009. Tarmo Tamm, who wis the mayor o Põlva for mair than 11 years, went tae the pairlament in Aprile 2011.[1][2] Since 11 May 2011 the mayor is Georg Pelisaar.[3]
