Hertsa Raion (Ukrainian: Герцаївський район, translit.: Hertsaiivs'kyi raion; Romanie: Raionul Herţa pronounced [raˈjonul ˈhert͡sa]) is a admeenistrative raion (destrict) in the soothren pairt o Chernivtsi Oblast in wastren Ukraine, on the Romanie border. The region haes a aurie o 308.7 km² an 32,000 inhabitants, an centres on the ceety o Hertsa.
History
[eedit | eedit soorce]The region wis pairt o the Principality o Moldavie syne its foondin in the 14t century an efter the union o Moldavie wi Wallachie in 1859 it became part of Romanie, which gained its formal unthirldom in 1877.
Hertza region wis occupee'd bi the Soviet Union in 1940 follaein the signin o the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact wi Nazi Germany, an wis addit tae the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. It wis recaptured bi Romanie in 1941 in the course o Axis attack on the Soviet Union in the Seicont Warld War, but wis recaptured again bi the Soviet Airmy in 1944. The annexation wis confirmit bi the Paris Peace Treaties in 1947 atween the USSR an the Communist Romanie.
The fact that neither the secret protocol (appendix) o the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, which specifee'd the expansionist claims o both sides, nor the Juin 1940 Soviet Ultimatum demandin frae Romanie the adjacent territory o Northren Bukovina an Bessarabie includit Hertsa maks the captur bi the Soviets especially controversial. Furthermair, unlike Bessarabie an Northren Bukovina, the region haed no been a pairt o Imperial Roushie or Austrick-Hungary afore World War I, but haed been a pairt o Romanie an ane o its predecessor states, Moldavie, afore that.
In 1962, the region wis mergit intae the Hlybotskyi Raion, an in 1991, wis reinstatit again.
