Neebourin destricts are Emmendingen, Schwarzwald-Baar, Waldshut, Lörrach an the French départements o the Haut-Rhin an the Bas-Rhin. The destrict-free ceety o Freiburg is surroondit bi the destrict. The destrict is namit efter the Breisgau, a historical territory, an the heich pairts o the Black Forest (Hochschwarzwald).

History

The district was created in 1973 by merging the previous districts of Freiburg, Müllheim und Hochschwarzwald.

Geography

Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald is a lairge an rural destrict wi at least three destinct landscapes:

1. the river plain o the Upper Rhine (Oberrheinebene) wi the Kaiserstuhl muntain, the Tuniberg, the Breisgau an the Markgräflerland
2. the slopes o the Black Forest muntains, wi Black Forest valleys reachin tae the Rhine, such as Glottertal, Dreisamtal, Höllental an Münstertal
3. the heicher muntain ranges o the Black Forest (Hochschwarzwald), includin the heichest muntain in the Black Forest, the Feldberg (1493 m)

Poleetically, the majority o the destrict parliament (Kreistag) is traditionally conservative (CDU), wi heicher levels o conservative votes the farther the distance frae Freiburg (which haes a red-green majority).
