Nae a bad idea. -- Derek Ross 23:54, 15 Julie 2005 (UTC)[replie]

Since there is no instruction on making a wikipedia page, and i would like to make one, may i request a Nickelodean page, a Bill Gates page, and a Ted Turner page to be created. I actually have many many pages to ask for but i will need the code to start one with, or at least to know where to start one, i know how but not where to look to create one. -- Mrmattkatt 00:14, 8 Februar 2006 (UTC)[replie]

Aye, there is. Tak a leuk at the Lessons link on the Commonty Yett page. Ye'll lear the wey tae mak a neow page there. -- Derek Ross 01:01, 8 Februar 2006 (UTC)[replie]

Macedonian

[eedit soorce]

Hey guys, I'm very happy that there's a Wikipedia in Scottish. I myself am from Macedonia (u remember, the country that u played football in the qualifiers in 2008 with, and ye lost 2-1, but that's not the point ;)). Well since Scots and Macedonians have become great friends (just look it up on youtube, Scotland in Skopje), and our capital is full of stickers that say Scottish, not British!, and the fact that the party went on without any hostilities (in fact, friendliness, and a bit more...) and a lot of alcohol besides the loss till the morning hours, should be enough to add Macedonian in the list of languages. Our Wikipedia has 25.000 articles, so you should add it anyway :) Cheers! Guitardemon666 22:05, 4 Mairch 2009 (UTC)[replie]

Disambiguation

[eedit soorce]

Some admin can add <includeonly>__DISAMBIG__</includeonly> on Template:Disambig? (see this page for detail, so it's easy to check if a page is a really disambiguation page and last but not least is automatically filled :) Maybe also in Template:Geodis is necessary. Months in Scots causing errors

[eedit soorce]

Hello, I'm trying to clear up some of the errors her, and I came across something. Some articles have cites with the months in Scots (Mairch, Apryle, etc) and this is causing errors. See Akaa for example. Can the template be adjusted to treat these as correct instead of errors?--Auric (tauk) 11:32, 19 Juin 2016 (UTC)[replie]

@Auric which template? Irtapil (tauk) 00:33, 13 Julie 2024 (UTC)[replie]
cite web, but ut looks like the problem haes been fixed sin syne. Auric (tauk) 17:27, 13 Julie 2024 (UTC)[replie]

is this category spelled right

[eedit soorce]

(en: I'm a curious English speaker trying to help)

This category Category:Europe seems to be in English? I'm not sure what the Scots spelling would be, but that looks unlikely?

Irtapil (tauk) 12:09, 5 Mey 2024 (UTC)[replie]

the page uses that spelling Europe, so maybe it is right? Irtapil (tauk) 12:12, 5 Mey 2024 (UTC)[replie]
A dinna see ocht wrang wi't. Inglis an Scots is sib leids aifter aa, sae thay will share sum names (a bit lik foo it's Europa in baith Dutch an German) CiphriusKane (tauk) 12:24, 5 Mey 2024 (UTC)[replie]

"leid (for?) collogue(s?)"

[eedit soorce]

Switching to English for now…

What language do other editors prefer English speakers use in discussions? I'm a language nerd from Australia, so definitely not a native speaker of Scots.

For editing articles I'd use a "know my limits" approach, e.g. things like tables and categories where I can make sure I've got a word or short phrase right, check with other users if I'm at all unsure, then re-use those carefully checked bits wherever they're needed.

But that's doesn't work for discussions (see subject heading).

For languages were a lot of other editors don't speak English, I would use a mix of my best attempt and a bit of automation, or I would be very careful to use very simple English. But both of those seem wrong for a language with a lot of mutual intelligibility, and for which most speakers are bilingual?

I could mix English with the tiny bits of Scots I know, but I worry that looks like a terrible parody of the language? Likewise for my best attempt at Scots, which would be full of errors.

Irtapil (tauk) 00:07, 13 Julie 2024 (UTC)[replie]

Hey hey! I have similar worries - you're not alone... I tend to edit around the edges (on my volunteer account) adding citations, tidying up bits that I know I can tidy up. In general I'd always use the language of the project on that project's discussion pages in the first instance where possible - but where it's not possible folks have been pretty understanding IME :) Sara Thomas (WMUK) (tauk) 11:32, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[replie]
