Modification to IF statement

[eedit soorce]

(in Inglis) Hiya, I think I've worked out why pages tagged with this template weren't ending up in the right maintenance category. I think the IF statement is causing some issues, as people tend to just be adding the bare {{Fix Scots}} rather than including a |date= parameter. It should probably be changed from

{{#if:{{{date|}}}|{{{category|[[Category:Pages that wis written by a body that's mither tongue isna Scots]]}}}|{{{category|[[Category:Wikipaedia cleanup]]}}}}}

to simply

{{Documentation}}

then in the /doc page:

[[Category:Pages that wis written by a body that's mither tongue isna Scots]]

Someone more knowledgeable in wiki-markup than I might want to set up some dated maintenance categories, perhaps... James Hyett (tauk) 16:33, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[replie]

"A body that's mither tongue isna Scots"... so?

[eedit soorce]

Dear people, I think we need to rephrase that. What this template tries to say is "this page was written by somebody with an insufficient command of Scots. Accordingly the language used here is faulty; please fix that." But now it literally says "this page was written by somebody whose mother tongue isn't Scots." That's not quite the same. If you weren't born and raised in a language, you can still become a competent speaker. In fact, there are millions of Scots who were raised in English but use it as a second language. This text suggests that all these people produce faulty Scots per definition; that it's physically impossible to produce sound Scots if you weren't literally raised in it. This is likely to repel competent users wanting to help. Steinbach (tauk) 09:51, 27 Februar 2021 (UTC)[replie]

I do want people to discuss this issue. Steinbach (tauk) 11:09, 4 Mairch 2021 (UTC)[replie]

Agreed. "Mither Tongue" isna the kin o thing that it shoud be sayin weeSven (tauk) 19:57, 10 Mey 2021 (UTC)[replie]
