Etymology
[eedit | eedit soorce]The name o Segovia is o Celtiberian oreegin. The first inhabitants namit the ceety Segobriga." This name comes frae twa terms o celtiberian oreegin, leid o the celtic Indo-European branch. It comes frae the term Sego, which means «victory» (prefix an aw present in ither ceeties such as Segeda an Segontia) an the suffix -briga, which wad mean «ceety» or «strength». So it micht be translatit as "Ceety o the victory" or "Victorious ceety".
Unner the Romans and Arabs, the ceety wis cried Segovia (Σεγουβία, Ptolomeo ii. 6. § 56) an Šiqūbiyyah (Arabic شقوبية) respectively.
