It is a territory equivalent tae a regional coonty municipality (TE) an a census diveesion (CD) an aw, for baith o which its geographical code is 66.

It consists o the 2002–2005 territory o the ceety o Montreal, an is coextensive wi the Urban Agglomeration o Montreal (French: Agglomération de Montréal). Follaein merger o aw the municipalities o the agglomeration intae ane on 1 Januar 2002, saxteen o its municipalities wur reconstitutit on 1 Januar 2006. The urban agglomeration is govrened bi the Montreal Agglomeration Council (French: Conseil d'agglomération de Montréal). Prior tae the merger o the municipalities in Region 06 in 2002, the admeenistrative region wis co-extensive wi the Montreal Urban Community.

Locatit in the soothwastren pairt o the province, the territory includes several o the islands o the Hochelaga Airchipelago in the Saint Lawrence River, includin the Island o Montreal, Nuns' Island (Île des Sœurs), Île Bizard, Saint Helen's Island (Île Sainte-Hélène), Île Notre-Dame, Dorval Island (Île Dorval), an several ithers.

The region is the seicont-smawest (499.19 km², or 192.74 sq mi) an maist populous (1,854,442 at 2006 census) o Quebec's seiventeen admeenistrative regions.

The executive o the urban agglomeration is the agglomeration cooncil. The wichtin o votes for the cooncil breaks doun tae 87% for the Ceety o Montreal, an 13% for the ither municipalities o the Island o Montreal.[2]
