Mariel is a municipality an ceety in the Artemisa Province o Cuba. It is locatit approximately 40 kilometre (25 mi) wast o the ceety o Havana. The toun is situatit on the sooth-east side o the Mariel bay. La Boca, Henequen, Mojica, Quiebra Hacha, Cabañas are major touns that conform the municipality o Mariel.

On the east side o the bay are a port, cement wirks an a pouer station, which contribute tae vera heich levels of environmental contamination. On the wast side o the bay is a umwhile submarine base, later designatit as a free trade zone.

The port o Mariel is the nearest port tae the United States. In 1980, some 125,000 Cubans left Mariel an went tae the Unitit States in wha is kent as the Mariel boatlift. While mony reached the USA, several dee'd while travelin through the ocean. Those involvit became kent as "Marielitos".
