The series centers aroond Dora, a 7 (Later 8) year auld American girl o Indigenous Mexican heritage, wi a luve o embarking on quests relatit tae an activity that she wants tae partake o or a place that she wants tae go tae, accompanied bi her talking purple backpack and anthropomorphic monkey companion named Boots (named for his beloved pair o reid boots). Each episode is based aroond a series o cyclical events that occur alang the wey during Dora's travels, alang wi obstacles that she and Boots are forced tae overcome or puzzles that thay hae tae solve (wi "assistance" frae the viewing audience) relating tae riddles, the Spaingie leid, or counting. Common rituals mey involve Dora's encounters wi Swiper, a bipedal, anthropomorphic masked thieving fox whose theft o the possessions o others must be preventit throu fourth wall-breaking interaction wi the viewer. Tae stap Swiper, Dora must say "Swiper no swiping" three times. Houiver, on occasions whaur Swiper steals the belongings o ither fowk, the viewer is presented wi the challenge o helpin Boots and Dora locate the stolen items. Anither obstacle involves encounters wi anither ane o the program's antagonists; the "Grumpy Old Troll" dwelling beneath a bridge that Dora and Boots must cross, who challenges them wi a riddle afore permitting them the past that needs tae be solved wi the viewer's help. Kent for the constant breaking o the fourth-wall depicted in every episode, the audience is uisually presented tae two primary laundmerks that must be passed afore Dora can reach her destination, normally bein challenged wi games or puzzles alang the wey. The episode always ends wi Dora successfully reachin the locale, singing the "We Did It!" sang wi Boots in triumph.

On numerous occasions, television specials hae been aired for the series in which the uisual events o regular episodes are altered, threatened, or replaced. Uisually said specials will present Dora wi a bigger, mair whimsical adventure than uisual or wi a magical task that must be fulfilled, or perhaps even offer a series o different adventures for Boots and Dora tae traivel throu. Thay might be presented wi an unusual, difficult task (sic as assisting Swiper in his attempts tae be erased frae Santa Claus's Naughty List) that normally is nae featurt in average episodes, or challenge Dora wi a goal that must be achieved (sic as the emancipation o a trapped mermaid). Whiles, the specials hae involved the debut o new characters, sic as the birth o Dora's superpowered twin baby siblings an the introduction o the enchanted anthropomorphic stars that accompany Dora on mony o her quests.
