Alyn Smith

Alyn Smith (born 15 September 1973 in Glesga) is a Scots politeecian, Member o Pairlament for Stirlin (syne 2019) an a umwhile member o the European Pairlament (2004 to 2019), representin the Scots National Pairty (SNP).[1]

Smith cam frae Glesga, his paurents wir Jane an Edward Smith, an he lived as a child in Scotland an in Saudi Arabia. He wis eddicatit (1986 tae1995) in law (LLB Hons) at the Varsity o Leeds, an a year at the Varsity o Heidelberg, Germany an did a maisters degree at in European studies at the College o Europe, Natolin, Warsaw. In 1996, Smith completit his Diploma in Legal Practice at the Nottingham Trent University. He taught Inglis in India, and workit wi Scotland Europa, Brussels. Frae 1997 tae 1999, he practiced commercial law in Lunnon wi Clifford Chance, then for twa years wi Anderson Strathern. He wis erstwhile a director o Turning Point Scotland, trustee o LBGT Youth Scotland, an is Honorary Vice Preses o Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).[1]

European Pairlament[eedit | eedit soorce]

He wis seicont on the SNP's leet for the 2004 European election, as the youngest Scots MEP, but ahint Ian Hudghton. He wis re-electit in 2009, 2014 and 2019. Efter Hudghton's demission in 2019, Smith, sat alangside SNP colleagues Christian Allard an Aileen McLeod, in the EU pairlament as pairt o the jynt Green/European Free Alliance group, an becam their vice-preses,[2] sittin oan mony committees an groups.[3]

In Mairch 2019, he wis quotit in the press as sayin aboot BREXIT, that the fowk o Scotland hid nae votit for it, an that the EU should "leave a light on for Scotland so we can find our way home" (Inglis)[4][5]

Smith wis electit in 2019, wi ower half the votes, to be member o Pairlament fir Stirling.[6] He wis appointit Foreign Affairs Spokesperson in the SNP group in 2020.[7]
