He graduatit fae the Varsity o Glesga wae ae MA in Scots language an leeteratur, continuing his studdies at the Varsity o Aiberdeen, graduating wae a PhD in Scots leid in 1998. He wrate his Phd thesis in an anent the Scots leid,[2] an syne wrocht for SNP politeecians, Mike Russell an Alex Salmond amang them.
He flittit tae the Isle o Lewis an teuk the Na h-Eileanan an Iar seat fae Labour in 2007 on a 5.4% swing, wi 46% o the vote.[3]
