Saône-et-Loire (French pronunciation: [soː.n‿e.lwaʁ]; Arpitan: Sona-et-Lêre) is a French depairtment, namit efter the Saône an the Loire rivers atween which it lees.

History[eedit | eedit soorce]

When it wis formit durin the French Revolution, as o 4 Mairch 1790 in fulfillment o the law o 22 Dizember 1789, the new depairtment combined pairts o the provinces o soothren Burgundy an Bresse, unitin launds that haed nae previous common history nor poleetical unity an which hae nae true geographical unity. Thus its history is that o Burgundy, an is especially tae be foond in the local histories o Autun, Mâcon, Chalon-sur-Saône, Charolles an Louhans.

Geografie[eedit | eedit soorce]

Saône-et-Loire is the seivent lairgest depairtment o Fraunce an the maist densely populatit in the region o Burgundy. In the east the depairtment is componit o the hills o the Autunois, the region aroond Autun, o the Charollais an o the Mâconnais. In the centre it is traversed frae north tae sooth bi the Saône in its wide plain; the Saône is a tributar o the River Rhône that joins it at Lyon an thus is connectit tae the Mediterranean Sea. The Loire maks its wey in the opposite direction, drainin intae the Atlantic Ocean. The Canal du Centre links the Saône tae the Loire atween Chalon-sur-Saône an Digoin, tharebi linkin the Mediterranean Sea tae the Atlantic ocean. In the east the depairtment occupees the northren pairt o the plain o Bresse. In the wast its industrial hert is in Le Creusot an Montceau-les-Mines.
