Campeche (Spainyie pronunciation: [kamˈpetʃe]), offeecially Free an Sovereign State o Campeche (Spainyie: Estado Libre y Soberano de Campeche), is ane o the 31 states which, wi the Federal Destrict, comprise the 32 Federal Entities o Mexico. Locatit in Sootheast Mexico, it is bordered bi the states o Yucatán tae the north east, Quintana Roo tae the east, an Tabasco tae the sooth wast. To the south it is bordered bi the Petén department o Guatemala, tae the east by Belize an tae the wast bi the Guwf o Mexico. The state caipital, cried Campeche, wis declared a Warld Heritage Steid in 1997. The formation o the state began wi the ceety, which wis foondit in 1540 as the Spainyie began the conquest o the Yucatán Peninsulae. Durin the colonial period, the ceety wis a rich an important port, but declined efter Mexico’s Unthirldom. Campeche wis pairt o the state o Yucatán but split aff in the mid-19t century, maistly due tae poleetical friction wi the ceety o Mérida. The day, hintle o the state’s economic comeback is due tae the fyndin o petroleum affshore in the 1970s, which haes made the coastal ceeties o Campeche an Ciudad del Carmen important economic centers.
