It wis foondit in 1879[1] unner the name Las Casas. The name wis chyngit tae Palmira an the commonty wis incorporatit in 1940. The municipality is dividit intae the barrios o Primero, Segundo, Arango y Escarza.[1]
The thermal watter resort o Ciego Montero an the homonymous bottled watter plant are locatit in the municipality, 12 km (7.5 mi) form the toun o Palmira.
