It is possible that Proto-Indo-European *h₂ōwyóm (“egg”), that wad hae acome *wowan in Proto-Baltic, mey hae influenced the development o *wuolan intae ola. A synonym term pauts wis uised alangside ola till the beginnin o the 20t century, whan ola becam dominant an replaced it. Cognates include Lithuanian uolà (“cliff, rock”).
