Belmonte (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˌbɛɫˈmõt(ɨ)]) is a municipality in Portugal. It haes a total aurie o 118.8 km² an a total population o 7,662 inhabitants.
History
[eedit | eedit soorce]Belmonte is the birthplace o Pedro Álvares Cabral, the navigator who discovered the land o Vera Cruz, nou kent as Brazil. Locatit in the Kirk o Santa Maria is the iconic statue o Nossa Senhora da Esperança (Oor Lady o Howp), which Cabral teuk wi him in his voyage. Till 1834, the statue wis held bi the Monastery o Nossa Senhora da Esperança. The umwhile releegious facility haes been adaptit for uise as a modren boutique hotel.
The sangster Zeca Afonso livit in Belmonte for pairt o his bairnheid, atween 1938 an 1940. He livit wi his uncle, the mayor o the toun, whilst his parents wur livin in Mozambique.
Belmonte is hame tae the last remainin commonty o marranos (kent as the Belmonte Jews). They offeecially returned tae Judaism in the 1970s an opened a synagogue in 1996.
In 2003, the American Sephardi Federation foondit the Belmonte Project, designatit tae raise funds tae acquire Judaic eddicational material an services for the commonty, which nou nummers 160-180. They opened a Jewish Museum o Belmonte (Portuguese: Museu Judaico de Belmonte) on 17 April 2005. In the simmer o 2006, the American Sephardi Federation ceased tae hae the Belmonte Project unner its auspices.
