The settlement, which became a toun in 1553, wi the name o Santo André da Borda do Campo, experienced rapid growth beginnin in the 1930s. It wis oreeginally namit São Bernardo acause the municipality destrict heidquarters wur in São Bernardo do Campo, nou a ceety nearbi. In 1938, the name wis chyngit tae Santo André, as the destrict govrenment wis transferred tae Santo André. Industries include chemical engineering, textiles, ile, metal products, metallurgy an printit matter. It is an industrial ceety, but mair than 60% o Santo André's total aurie are protectit bi environmental watter laws.
In 1867, a railway namit the São Paulo Railway Co. or the Estrada de Ferro Santos-Jundiaí, made it easier tae be reached. In 1954, it became the seat o the Roman Catholic Diocese o Santo André.
