The baund wis formed in early 2002 unner the name "Hyperborea" bi the sangster Maria Arkhipova an umwhile drummer Alexander Korolyov, in Februar o that year the baund chyngit thair name tae "Arkona".

Awtho the baund haed played in local gigs in 2003 wi various baunds, maist notably Pagan Reign an Butterfly Temple, maist members lost interest in the baund. In September 2003, Arhipova the wis the anerlie oreeginal member o the baund who remained. The baund's demo "Rus'" wis released three month later. This got Arkona signed tae Sound Age Productions.

In 2004 the baund released thair first twa albums Vozrozhdenie (Scots: "rebirth") an wi guest muisickers an Lepta on 20 Aprile an 30 December respectively. The follaein year Arkona released thair third album "Vo Slavu Velikim!" (Scots: "In honor o the Great"). In 2006 thay released thair first live album Zhizn Vo Slavu, on which the pieces o the demo are includit as bonus tracks.

On 31 October 2007 durin a concert in Moscow, Arkona's fowert studio album "Ot Serdza k Nebu" (Scots: "Frae the hert o the sky") is presentit. The concert wis recordit wi sax cameras, an finally publisht in 2009 as a live DVD unner the name "Ночь Велесова" (Night o Veles) (Scots "Nicht o Veles"). An aw in 2007, Arkona played several gigs in Central Europe in the German festival Rock for Roots Nauen. In 2008 Arkona signed a recordin contract wi the Austrian metal label Napalm Records, whaur released the album Ot Serdza k Nebu in a slichtly amendit version an ootside Roushie. In the same year thay wur guests at the Ragnarök Festival appearance at the Ragnarök Festival 2009 wis planned but it wis canceled due tae the birth o Arkhipova's seicont bairn.

In Ware 2009 the baund released the compilation Pojom Wmeste (German "Let's Sing Thegither) wi 15 sangs frae previous albums. The pieces are aw present as instrumental versions, anerlie backgrund choruses are present in some places.

On 30 October 2009, the album Goi, Rode, Goi! wis released on Napalm Records. On 7 October, a muisic video for the title track wis presentit. On 17 Mairch 2010 their seicond video on this album wis shot, Faces Of Immortal Gods (Roushie: Лики Бессмертных Богов).

On 27 Mey 2011 came the EP Stenka Na Stenku (Scots "waw tae waw"). This includes, amang ither cover versions o twa sangs frae Shaman an the Roushie baund Svarga, an twa new, previously unreleased sangs. The title refers tae an auld Roushie custom, in which twa indwallers fecht a friendly fist fecht wi ilk ither. In early Mey,the title track o the EP, a video wis released.

In August 2011, the latest studio album cried Slovo (Scots: "wird") wis released. Wi a runnin time o amaist 60 minutes, it wad be significantly shorter than Goi, Rode, Goi! wi nearly 80 minutes, but mair sangs on the album.

On 11 Mairch 2010, a clip o the sang "Yarilo" frae Goi, Rode, Goi! wis featurt on the St. Patrick's Day episode o the U.S. version o the telly series The Office. Three (apparently Roushie) janitors walkit in wi the sang playin while the wirkers wur still in the office, forced tae wirk late.
