Hind Rajab was a six-year-old girl from the Tel al-Hawa neighbourhood in Gaza City who was killed by the Israel Defense Forces, after being the sole survivor of Israeli tank fire on the vehicle she fled in with six relatives.[1][2] The Israeli operation deliberately killed two Palestine Red Crescent Society members, Yusuf Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun, sent to rescue her, according to the aid group.[3] Her story gained significant media coverage in February 2024, after her emergency phone call with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society was released.

During the Israel–Hamas war, Israel issued evacuation orders throughout the Gaza Strip. On 29 January 2024, Rajab's family were fleeing Gaza City when their vehicle was targeted by an Israeli army tank, killing Hind's aunt, uncle, and three cousins. The only other survivor, Hind's 15 year old cousin Layan Hamadeh, called the Palestinian Red Crescent Society to come and save her and Hind, but Layan was also killed while still on the line. Hind was left alone in the car and stayed on the line with the PRCS for three hours, telling the dispatcher; "I'm so scared, please come, Come take me. You will come and take me?".[4][2] Hind, who was instructed to continue hiding in the vehicle, was set to be rescued by a PRCS ambulence.[5]
Search and rescue[eedit | eedit soorce]
As the area was besieged, the Palestinian Red Crescent worked with the Gaza Health Ministry and the IDF to guarantee safe passage for their ambulance crew to go and save Hind. Shortly after the ambulance was dispatched, the Red Crescent lost contact with them. For 12 days, the fate of Hind and the paramedics sent to find her was unknown.[6]

On 10 February 2024, the family returned to the neighbourhood after the withdrawal of the IDF, at which point they found the car with Hind and her uncle's entire family deceased.[7] The Red Crescent ambulance was found a few feet away, completely destroyed by an Israeli missile,[8] resulting in the deaths of two ambulance workers,[9] Yusuf al-Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun, who were sent to rescue Hind.[10]

Hind's case garnered international attention with calls by activists and humanitarian organizations to help find her and bring her to safety when she was missing for the 12 days. Her mother begged for the international community not to forget her daughter and to bring her home.[11]
