The Ryal an Venerable Britherheid o the Blessed Sacrament o Mafra (Portuguese: Real e Venerável Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento de Mafra), is a public association o faithful o the Catholic Kirk, canonically establishit in the Basilica o Our Lady an St. Anthony o the Ryal Biggin o Mafra, in Portugal, inscribit on 7 Julie 2019 as a UNESCO Warld Heritage Steid.[1]
The britherheid organizes the solemnity o Corpus Christi an the four traditional processions o the season o Lentren in Mafra, namely: the Procession o the Passion o the Lord (Procissão do Senhor Jesus dos Passos, in portuguese); the Procession o Penance o the Third Order o Saunt Francis (Procissão de Penitência da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco, in portuguese); the Procession o the Seven Sorrows o Our Lady (Procissão das Sete Dores de Nossa Senhora, in portuguese), an the Procession o the Burial o the Lord (Procissão do Enterro do Senhor, in portuguese).
The britherheid possesses an artistic, documental an cultural heritage o great importance an value. The first documental reference tae the britherheid dates tae 14 Mairch 1597, in a testament o Jorge Rodrigues[4].
The oldest document o the britherheid is the Agreement o 5 Juin 1725[4].
In 1835, after the extinction o the religious orders, the heidquarters o the britherheid movit tae the Basilica o Our lady an St. Anthony in Mafra, tae the old hall o novices, bi the invitation o Queen Maria II o Portugal[4].
In 1866, the britherheid receivit from the Civil Government the assets o the extinct Third Order o St. Francis at Mafra[6], an later also receivit the assets o the extinct Confraternity o the Lord Jesus o the Steps o Mafra (Irmandade do Senhor Jesus dos Passos de Mafra, in Portuguese)[7], assumin their heritage wi the responsibility o ensurin their mission tae organise processions thon usit tae be held bi the twa confraternities – the Procession o Penance o the Third Order o St. Francis an the Procession o the Burial o the Lord, both o which were promotit bi the first confraternity; an the Procession o the Passion o the Lord organizit bi the second confraternity, abuin mentionit[4].
The britherheid wis under the guardianship o the keengs o Portugal until the proclamation o the Republic, on 5 October 1910. The last Keeng o Portugal, Manuel II, wis an honorary an perpetual juiz (principal) o the britherheid[4].
In 1953, after the return o the Procession o the Seven Sorrows o Our Lady, the britherheid receivit the assets o the extinct Britherheid o Our Lady o Sorrows o Mafra (Irmandade de Nossa Senhora das Dores de Mafra, in Portuguese), wi the responsibility o organizin this procession annually[8].
