In medieval times the region wis a pairt o the Bishopric o Würzburg. When the clerical states o Germany wur dissolved in 1803, it fell tae Bavarie. The destrict o Rhön-Grabfeld wis established in 1972, when the umwhile destricts o Bad Neustadt, Königshofen an Mellrichstadt wur mergit.

Grabfeld is a fertile region sooth o the Rhön muntains. Literally it means "digfield". Accordin tae local legend a queen ance lost her belovit ring in the Grabfeld. She ordered her servants tae dig up the whole aurie. When the ring wis foond, she was relieved an ordered a ryal estate tae be built whaur it was foond. Later this estate became the ceety o Königshofen.
The source o the Fränkische Saale is locatit in the destrict. The river runs through the destrict frae north tae sooth.
