The oreeginal name o the municipality wis Tongkil, an wis renamit Banguingui on 29 Januar 1999 bi virtue o Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act No. 71 o the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in honor o the dominant Banguingui tribe o the municipality. It wis inauguratit anerly on 29 Januar 2006.[3]
