The toun wis foondit in the early 17t century, unner the Spaniards, bi a noble frae Calatafimi, Vito Sicomo. The birth o the tounship wis then ratifeed bi Keeng Philip III o Spain on 11 Mairch 1607.
In 1860, the toun gave its full support tae the Mille led bi Giuseppe Garibaldi. In the early 1900s, the ceety reached its heichest population, with 6,000 inhabitants circa. The derivation o the name is uncertain: it is possibly associatit tae the foonder's name, but micht either be o Arab oreegin (there is a toun namit Vita in Algerie too), or even somehou associatit tae the same Italian wird which means life.
