The kintra adoptit its Constitution on 10 Mey 1979, which is observed as a Naitional Day.[6]

Economy[eedit | eedit soorce]

The economy o the caipital ceety is reflectit in the economic resoorces o the Micronesie Islands (600 islands an islets includin Pohnpei where the caipital o the islands is locatit.[7]) as a whole. The economy o the island is basically o subsistence fairmin an fishin (fish processin an aquacultur). Products such as fish, bananas, black pepper, an garments are mainly exportit tae Japan. Importit items are fuid, manufactured guids, machinery an equipment an beverages.[10][6] The local economy is dependent on its tropical agricultural an plantation products o copra, breadfruit, taros, betel nuts, sweet tatties, casava, tropical fruits an vegetables, trochus shells, an cacao an rice. Livestock fairming such as pigs an poultry are raised. Fishin is also a major economic activity.[7][6] Wi the exception o phosphates (o heich-grade), thare is minimal minin activity. Baith the ceety an the kintra are nominally independent but in fact, depend on financial support stemmin frae its Compact o Free Association wi the US. As o 2012 the inflation rate wis 2%. an the cost o livin in Palikir is reportit tae very heich in comparison wi ither places in the kintra.[10]

The ceety itself haes commercial establishments such as shops, bars an businesses, makin it is ane o the maist commercial ceeties o the kintra. Mony o the streets are paved an also hae signage. Though thare wur 17,000 tourists in 2007 in Pohnpei, the infrastructur haes been unable tae accommodate everyane who wants tae visit. The leasin o fishin licenses tae foreign companies, Japanese, Korean an Taiwanese, helps the economy, but the marine resources o the federation could dwindle bi continuous fishin excesses. The toun contains the Palikir Elementary Schuil, a learnin resoorces centre, a friendship sports centre providit wi Cheenese investment; the govrenment biggins are locatit in a complex in the northren pairt o the toun.[13]
