Typhoon Haiyan (kent in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda) wis unofficially the strangest recorded tropical cyclone tae mak landfaw, wi wind speeds up tae 315 km/h (195 mph).[1] The thirteent named storm o the 2013 Paceefic typhoon saison, Haiyan originated frae an aurie o law pressur several hunder kilometers east-southeast o Pohnpei in the Federated States o Micronesie on November 2. Tracking generally wastward, environmental conditions favored tropical cyclogenesis an the seestem developed intae a tropical depression the follaein day. Efter acomin a tropical storm an attainin the name Haiyan at 0000 UTC on November 4, the seestem began a period o rapid intensification that broucht it tae typhoon intensity bi 1800 UTC on November 5. Bi November 6, the Joint Typhoon Wairnin Center (JTWC) assessed the seestem as a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale; the storm passed ower the island o Kayangel in Palau shortly efter attainin this strength.
Thereafter, it continued yo intensify; at 1200 UTC on November 7, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) upgradit the storm's maximum ten-minute sustained winds tae 235 km/h (145 mph), the heichest in relation tae the cyclone. At 1800 UTC, the JTWC estimatit the seestem's ane-minute sustained winds tae 315 km/h (195 mph), unofficially makin Haiyan the maist intense tropical cyclone ever observed. Several oors later, the ee o the cyclone made its first landfaw in the Philippines at Guiuan, Eastren Samar, wi anly chynge in intensity; if verified, this would mak Haiyan the strangest tropical cyclone tae mak a landfaw on record, supprisingly the auld record o 305 km/h (190 mph) set bi Atlantic Hurricane Camille in 1969. Gradually weakening, the storm made five additional landfaws in the kintra afore emerging ower the Sooth Cheenae Sea. Turning northwastward, the typhoon eventually struck northren Vietnam as a severe tropical storm on November 10. Haiyan wis last noticed as a tropical depression bi the JMA the follaein day.
The cyclone caused devastation in the Philippines, parteecularly on Samar Island an Leyte, the govenors estimatit that at least 10,000 fowk mey hae died in the ceety o Tacloban alone.[2]
