Trinidad wis foondit on 23 December 1514^[1] bi Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar unner the name Villa De la Santísima Trinidad. Francisco Iznaga, a rich Basque landawner in the soothren portion o Cuba durin the first 30 years o the colonization o Cuba, wis electit Mayor o Bayamo in 1540. Iznaga wis the oreeginator o a pouerful lineage that feenally settled in Trinidad whaur the Torre Iznaga is. His descendents focht for the Unthirldom o Cuba an the Annexation tae the US frae 1820 tae 1900. It is ane o the best preservit ceeties in the Caribbean frae the time when the succar trade wis the main industrie in the region.

Nouadays, Trinidad's main industrie is tobacco processin. The aulder pairts o toun are well preservit as the Cuban tourism industry sees benefit frae tour groups. In contrast, some pairts o toun ootside the nan-tourist auries are vera run doun an in disrepair, especially in the centre.

The municipality is dividit intae the barrios of Primero, Segundo, Tercero, Aguacate, Cabagán, Caracusey, Casilda, Guaniquical, Río de Ay, San Francisco, San Pedro an Táyaba.^[1]
