Sestroretsk (Roushie: Сестроре́цк; Finnish: Siestarjoki; Swadish: Systerbäck) is a municipal toun in Kurortny Destrict o the federal ceety o St. Petersburg, Roushie, locatit on the shores o the Guwf o Finland, the Sestra River an the Sestroretskiy Lake 34 kilometer (21 mi) northwast o St. Petersburg. Population: 36,680 (2010 Census preliminary results);[1] 40,287 (2002 Census);[2] 30,500 (1975).

Munitions factory

Sestroretsk wis foundit bi Peter the Great in 1714 due tae the construction o a munitions factory (the day's Sestroretsk Toolmaking Factory).

Healthcare

The toun is kent as a balneologic and climatic resort. A lairge hospital an rehabilitation centre is situatit athin the boondaries o the toun. It is the Ceety hospital No. 40 o Saunt Petersburg.

Poleetical history

In 1812, the toun wis incorporatit intae the Grand Duchy o Finland, alang wi Auld Finland. In 1864, the toun wis transferred tae Roushie in exchynge for a promise o compensation, supposedly in the form o access tae the Arctic Ocean at Petsamo.[3]

In 1875, Fyodor Pirotsky experimentit wi electrically pouered railwey caurs on the Miller's line railwey. The electricity wis transferred ower a distance o approximately ane kilometre. Although the experiment did no last, this wis the first uise o electricity tae pouer ony railwey in the warld.[4] Anither local railwey line o historical interest is the Sestroretsk spur line.

Vodoslivnyy canal

The Vodoslivnyy canal runs athort the toun frae east tae wast an connects the Sestroretskiy Lake wi the Guwf o Finland (Easter Seas).
